Zoo Med PowerSun UV 80w
Reptiles require heat, UVB light, and bright white visible light in their habitats to maintain optimal health and thrive. As ectothermic creatures, reptiles rely on external heat sources, such as the sun, to regulate their body temperature. This heat is essential for digestion, bodily functions, and overall well-being. Since they cannot generate their own heat, providing the right heat source through heat lamps is crucial for their care.
UVB light, a vital component of natural sunlight, is beneficial for most, if not all, reptiles. It plays a critical role in maintaining healthy and strong bones and supports various other essential physiological functions.
The Zoo Med PowerSun UV 80W is a self-ballasted mercury vapor bulb that emits UVA, UVB, and heat, all in one convenient lamp. By combining multiple wavelengths, the Zoo Med PowerSun UV closely mimics natural sunlight, providing your reptile with a more complete and balanced light source for their needs.
Instructions for Use:
Install the Zoo Med PowerSun UV in a wire lamp fixture to prevent overheating. Position the lamp on the far left or right side of the terrarium to create a proper temperature gradient. Refer to the UVI chart below and adjust the distance between the lamp and the basking area based on your reptile’s specific UVB requirements. An additional heat lamp, such as the Zoo Med Repti Tuff Halogen Lamp, may be needed to achieve the ideal basking temperature for your reptile.
Replace the Zoo Med PowerSun UV every 6 months to ensure optimal performance. For best results, use with a Zoo Med Digital UV Index Radiometer or Solarmeter 6.5.
UV Index:
4" below lamp — UVI 2.6 - 3.5+
5" below lamp — UVI 2.6 - 3.5+
6" below lamp — UVI 2.6 - 3.5+
7" below lamp — UVI 1.0 - 2.6
8" below lamp — UVI 1.0 - 2.6
10" below lamp — UVI 0.7 - 1.0
12" below lamp — UVI 0.7 - 1.0
14" below lamp — UVI 0.7 - 1.0
16" below lamp — UVI 0.4 - 0.7
18" below lamp — UVI 0.4 - 0.7
Different reptiles have unique UVB requirements. Consult the Arcadia UV Index Lighting Guide to determine the appropriate UVI for your pet’s basking area.
Distance is measured from the tip of the bulb to the basking area or reptile. UVI estimations are approximate. Note that UVI is reduced by 30-40% when the UVB bulb is placed over a mesh screen.
